Justifying gay marriage on civil rights and inheritance/benefit rights is fine and the reason I am accepting it as well.But the economic benefits you cite are not as simple. True caterers may have more business. OTOH the overall health benefit expense for many companies will go up as they have to offer family coverage or individual + 1 coverage to more employees. Increased prices to cover the increased benefit cost may follow. Tax benefits are not as clear either. If a company provides benefits for domestic partners it is now taxable income to the employee. If they marry then what used to be taxable income is now a pre-tax benefit to the employee and a tax deduction to the employer. Overall I think the positive and negative economic impacts will end up negating each other. |
