The so-called "entitlements" do benefit old and poor people, but America will no longer be able to afford them in their present form unless the benefits are cut or the contributions are increased. Of course, once something comes to be regarded as an entitlement, it becomes politically difficult to change it. Any deficit reduction plan should also take into account subsidies and tax deductions, both corporate and personal. |
