the vast amount of our current deficit is the result of tax cuts and unfunded mandates and wars rather than some largesse for the common voter's benefit.

I agree that tax cuts and wars have been a large part of the story recently.

The so-called "entitlements" do benefit old and poor people, but America will no longer be able to afford them in their present form unless the benefits are cut or the contributions are increased. Of course, once something comes to be regarded as an entitlement, it becomes politically difficult to change it.

Any deficit reduction plan should also take into account subsidies and tax deductions, both corporate and personal.
