Does this mean that tax cuts for the rich will be allowed to expire?

I hope so.

But this is such a big problem that no single measure is likely to solve it. Something must be done about the so-called entitlements (medicare and social security), which will only get more expensive with the aging of the population. Also all subsidies and tax exemptions should be considered for elimination.

In my opinion the Simpson and Bowles draft proposal is a good bipartisan starting point.
