It's not about skin color. It's about hip-hop's recent violent history.

Actually, it is about skin color. Because hip-hop is not the source of the problem, not fundamentally anyway. If you noticed my post about Jamaica (West Indies, not Queens -- often called the Murder Capital of the World), or for that matter, places like Haiti or South Africa (once called the most dangerous place outside of a war zone), the problem is global. Unfortunately, the problem is black and brown people -- at least, a significantly larger share of them. Dark people the world over are more prone to crime. Perhaps because they sit in the IQ range of 70-90 (black American mean 85), the range shown in all races that are more prone to crime, or because of personality traits that are more common among dark people that are less common in other races, or perhaps those two facts are related (a freshly printed study even shows that on the county level, average IQ is predictive of crime rates even when controlling for things like poverty, unemployment and single motherhood), but regardless, that is the reality.

White people are more comfortable around more accomplished blacks (Henry Louis Gates notwithstanding) -- ones that are more like them -- for not the least reason that those blacks are on the upper end of the IQ curve. They don't want to be associated with those that embrace hip-hop culture (which contain a higher mix of less intelligent and more violent blacks). Much like your crack about "Walmart whites", the general rule is that high IQ people don't want to be associated with low IQ people (and I'm starting to suspect that whites historically from Appalachia have lower IQ's -- for some reason or another -- than the general white average -- judging from the NAEP scores, I'd guesstimate that Appalachian whites have mean IQ's of 90-95 -- a little better than Latinos and Native Americans). I can't say I blame them too much, because neither do I; I left the South Bronx and moved to a town that is 99% white for a reason -- and I'm not particularly interested in moving to the South -- least of which Appalachia (which interestingly extends to at least northern Maine).

I admit this in an interesting conundrum, because the last thing I'd want to do is find a justification for racism, and hopefully that's not quite what I'm doing. I fully believe that people should be judged as individuals (not for the least reason that in every group it's still a bell curve, so there always talented individuals -- and there are many other important traits besides IQ). But, railing against a place catering to "hip-hop" because it will attract a more disruptive, more dangerous group is a correct judgment statistically, and perhaps it is not wrong to not hold that against the residents.
