The Afghan war was a war of George W. Bush's choosing, with the approval of Congress, where the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists resolution was adopted almost unanimously.

However Michael Steele also said that the Afghan war is unwinnable. I think he was right, given that the concept of "victory" has become so nebulous.

Effectively the Afghan war was lost at Tora Bora in December 2001, when the US failed in its original purpose to capture Osama bin Laden and the Al Qaeda leadership. It's hard to see what if anything has been gained by continuing the occupation.

Afghanistan continues to be a potential safe haven for terrorists because it has plenty of room for them to hide. Besides, Al Qaeda terrorists are dispersed across numerous countries including the USA.

The purpose of "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan has somehow changed from counter-terrorism to counter-insurgency to nation building. Can America really afford to build a new nation in such a remote part of the world?
