It can definitely create scarcity and waste limited land resources. Instead of consumer demand being able to decide things in the marketplace, a master plan does. That's wonderful when the master plan isn't all that bad, but how often does that happen?It's worse than that: remember what was going on at the beginning of the 20th century. It's our old friend, the sanctimonious "Progressive" Era (also called the Fourth Party System), the guys who banned alcohol, legalized the federal income tax, and caused the Great Depression. Zoning was part of their other noxious policy: setting civil rights back half a century -- if you keep suburban municipalities a museum for rich people, it should combine with public sector education to keep the niggers out of the neighborhood. Never mind that it screws over poor whites too -- they're mainly Dagos, Spicks, and Leprechauns anyway. The whole thing is a sick joke, built upon propaganda interpretations of real public health issues and that curious late-19th-Century back-to-the-land anti-human-society movement. No, but it's been held to be within the reach of a State's "police power". And it's widely documented on Subchat quite how much the police can be the enemy of the people. They're essentially being used to circumvent the 3rd Amendment, which expresses a magnificently 18th-century concern for the sorts of liberties affected in the most ineffective language possible. Mercifully it's being very, very slowly phased out in NYC, which is at least some progress. It's nowhere near enough in terms of returning to the values that made America great. Yes, those values also produced Tammany Hall, but a little corruption is better than a sentimentalist socio-economic suicide. |
