We were walking on Canal St. It's a busy street. It was a Radisson Hotel (now out of business after the hurricane, but that's another story) a "few blocks" from the tourist area. It's not like we were walking through "the hood". It was Canal St. If you don't know Canal St (or the upper end of Canal St a few blocks from the heart of the French Quarter, I can't explain it, but it looked (before the hurricane) sort of like Jamaica Ave did in the 1980's. Not necessarily "bad", but seedy, mostly black. A white person is a minority in New Orleans. Everywhere. Especially just outside the touristy areas. It's not like we were walking through the 9th Ward in the middle of "the hood". |
