The rule, at least until Sam Alito's nomination is that for a U.S. Supreme Court nominee to be advanced for a full up-or-down vote, it must get a minimum of 10 yeas in committee, one of which must come from the minority party.Under that rule, Alito's nomination would have died in committee---until the Republicans changed this rule which had existed for just about as long as the USA has existed in one form or another. TIME Magazine noted it here, but it apparently forgot that the rule was likely abolished. |
