What does government recognition do, in particular, though?

Certain tax benefits are only available to married people.

Ditto certain employer benefits such as mandating spousal consent for a retirement pension for your life only.

Things to do with inheritance - your spouse is your automatic beneficiary for part of your estate if you don't have a will.
