My instinct is that government should be out of the marriage game entirely. I recognize that this may have implications for protections of non-working spouses and others, so I'd like to find a better solution.Government does have its value. ERISA's requirement that spouses have to consent in writing to an employee getting a life annuity has done more to cure poverty of the elderly than just about anything else the govt has done in the last 40 years. Before that a lot of husbands "forgot" to ask their wives' opinions. |
