The attackers got light sentences because the state of Michigan tried them as juveniles, not because some county sheriff decided that whites aren't protected by hate crime laws "Some county sheriff" was pressed on the matter of the fourteenth amendment versus hate crime laws (whereupon there should not be a "versus"), and this was his on-the-record reply (creating the "versus"). Especially relating to the entire incident. So the headline centers around that POV by that county sheriff more than the incident. The crimes committed are vicious enough that the attackers could have received very long sentences if they had been tried as adults, even if they weren't tried for any hate crimes That is true indeed. |
