They need to figure out what they'll do with the waste. As of last month's Scientific American the Germans were storing their waste in French, British, and Russian nuclear waste recycling facilities. Those countries require the nations they're reprocessing and storing nuclear waste for to take the waste back at some point in the future. Germany will need to develop a program for their nuclear waste before they can contemplate retaining their nuclear power program. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out. Admittedly I'm in Berlin, a historically very liberal area, but Merkel seems to be somewhat unpopular of late. She hasn't done a whole lot with the Turkish immigrants, a situation which makes America's Mexican immigration problems look downright simple. Unemployment, particularly in the former East Germany, remains high. Despite Merkel's being from the East herself her membership in the Bavarian oriented CDU may put off some of their East German supporters this time around. |
