No!!! They are the only thing that break up the monotony of Manhattan's grid system. Grid systems have their place, but they are certainly not always the best layout to take. I think it works well in a location like Manhattan which is relatively small, and Broadway is certainly a godsent in the middle of the monotony. But in general, I don't like it in areas like Brentwood, Deer Park, North Bellport, and many other places where the grid system strikes it's hard lines through the landscape. I feel it works well in urban areas, but not in suburban areas.
