Certain NFL teams had a national brand and identity.Steelers were the blue collar team of the 70's and into the 80's. Cowboys had a national following too. Chicago Bears were popular with their music video in 1985 and Refrigerator Perry as their top star. These days, viewers are happy to see Taylor Swift at a Chiefs game. In baseball, I'd say the Yankees are a national brand but not as strong as it was. They are a big draw when they travel to other cities. The Red Sox have a huge Dominican fan base because of Big Papi and Pedro Martinez. At one point you'd see Red Sox merch all over Washington Heights, Corona, and other Dominican communities. |
