A strange fact about the Oklahoma Panhandle

Posted by Peter Rosa on Tue Jul 7 01:23:15 2026

Originally part of Texas, from 1850 to 1890 it had no government. It was known as the Public Land Strip, and informally as No Man’s Land and the Cimarron Strip, and was not under the control of any state or territory. There were no courts, no law enforcement, and no government services at all. It not surprisingly became a haven for various fugitives. Some of the ranchers and farmers who occupied the sparsely populated area tried to form a territorial government but had no success. Congress finally made it part of the Oklahoma Territory in 1890.
