Re: Why I Don't Feel Much Like Celebrating the 4th This Year...

Leave aside the fact I’ll be working 11am to 8pm on the 4th, or that I am not particularly patriotic, there’s another reason: the government just announced that the prime age labor force participation rate is the lowest it’s been in 50 years outside of Covid. This is exceedingly disturbing.

A person participates in the labor force if they’re working any kind of job at all or make even the most desultory attempts to find a job. Do nothing except Doordashing a couple times a week? You participate in the labor force. Stop by your local Walmart on occasion and ask if they’re hiring? You participate in the labor force. The people who don’t participate in the labor force aren’t even doing these minimal things. In most cases, they’re out of work and decide it’s so hopeless that they don’t even bother trying to find a job.

Note: prime age means ages 25 to 54, so almost all students and retirees are excluded.
