Why I Don't Feel Much Like Celebrating the 4th This Year... |

Posted by Mitch45 on Thu Jul 2 14:25:02 2026 I love this country with a deep adoration that cannot be described. The United States took in my parents, two Holocaust survivors with little more than the shirts on their backs, and treated them with kindness and dignity and most importantly, provided them with the opportunity to overcome their tragic pasts and make new lives for themselves and their children (one of whom is me). I have always been eternally grateful for the United States and have always tried to return the favors done for me by being a good citizen - voting in every election, cooperating with the census, serving jury duty when called. I also have taught my children to love this country too.But this year, for the first time in my 61 years on this planet, I am just not in the mood to celebrate the 4th. I just don't feel like this is my country any more. I thought the United States was always going to be the paragon of reason and justice and fairness, setting a good example for the rest of the world. I never had to worry about my government not protecting me with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I never had to worry about government interference with my existence as a Jew. But no more. Every day, I wake to another story about Jew-hating politicians in New York and other parts of the country who are gaining influence and achieving public office. And they are achieving these accomplishments not in spite of their anti-Semitism but because of it. Its policy with them now. Its not enough for Jewish politicians to bend over to this new breed of Jew-haters - they have to voiceferously parrot their beliefs and even in some cases, that is not enough. These Jew-haters insist on politicians agreeing with them that Jews in Israel should be thrown into the sea - meaning that Jews are not entitled to a safe haven, are not entitled to self-determination and are not entitled to protect themselves from enemies. And every day, I read about more and more politicians who are embracing this. It makes me very, very sad. And to make it clear - the anti-Semitism of these people is not limited to Israel and Zionism. Those are just code words, like Bolsheviks and Communists were in the early Nazi era. I was raised by Holocaust survivors so I know Jew-hatred when I see it. And I am seeing it, every single day. And nobody seems to be able to stop it - or even really care enough to want to. As Edmund Burke and John Stuart Mill said, all it takes for evil to take hold is for good people to do nothing. And good people are doing nothing. Its hard being hated every day of your life by millions and millions of people you don't know, and will never know. Its worse when the country you were borh in and love is growing that hatred inside it. |
