Cycling is a form of interval training.Interval training is a technique used to increase speed. The article article specified aerobic and marathon exercise - not non-aerobic speed exercise. Actually, you cycle...I say that because you peddle, coast, peddle, coast, then maybe go up a steep hill then coast down. This is interval training. I was a long distance specialist. The only training is to ride long distances. One key to long distance riding is to maintain a modest pace. This was usually 24 km/hr (15 mph). Note that wind resistance varies as the square the relative velocity. Power varies as the cube. By contrast racers are traveling at nearly twice the speed and require 8 times the power output. Races are usually decided in a final sprint to the finish line. The other aspect was to achieve that speed using a relatively low gear and spin against fairly low resistance. The text book gear ratio for marathon distances was a 42x16 for 71 inches, with crank rates of greater than 75 rpm. At that rate, it's impossible to keep the feet on the pedals without some form of restraint. That's the reason for toe clips or clipless pedals. |
