Mamdani actually got a very large percentage of his primary votes from the middle class. Look at the map.

Just as one of many examples, he strongly won the East Village but lost the projects on Avenue D to Cuomo.

It's not a uniform picture by any means, but he wouldn't have won without very heavy middle class support.
