Who did they secure the land from?? Native Americans maybe?? But that debate is for another thread #2...They were indeed successful until progress interfered. Progress like the popularity and practicality of air travel and the "Eisenhauer" interstate system, financed by Uncle Sam (aka taxpayer) that put millions of cars and trucks on the road that werent there before, taking their freight and passengers with it. In addition, the railroads had to pay taxes on their ROWs and strangled by ICC regs on freight rates. All this coupled with disastrous mergers that led to Conrail and Amtrak.The rest as they say is history |
