The huge 83mil award was way out of line for a simple defamation.

Trump brought the $83 million on himself.

He posed as a crude and disgusting individual in the courtroom, in contrast to the kind and generous human being he really is.

He boasted of his wealth, so the jury obviously concluded higher punitive damages were needed to make a difference.
