"Very, very common in the Irish-Catholic community."

Utter nonsense. My Irish-Catholic mother was one of 15. Her mother spent most of her adult life pregnant, dying at 51 from breast cancer.
Reason: contraception and abortion were Mortal sins and upon death would command a sentence of the soul to eternal damnation in Hell, unless you went to confession and atoned for your sins. Women went to the altar for marriage pregnant rather than abort the baby.
Bottom line, convenience abortions were very rare if totally nonexistent. Thats the way it was.
I'm curious as to where you get your "facts" from.
