Very, very common in the Irish-Catholic community.Although it was common with Italian and French families too. My maternal grandfather is from Bari, Italy and a family of nine kids. My father is from Calabria and a family of six kids. But yes, Catholic shaming tactics played a big role in it all. So did farming. Farming communities have children as little helpers, thus large families. |
