It's too early to know whether this will be a problem or a footnote. It does point out the ability of the virus to mutate more quickly than our ability to track it - let alone contain it through only vaccines and therapeutics. The hope is the Omicron variant will crowd out more virulent variants by providing immunity against them. In vitro studies have shown the Omicron variant will provide immunity against the Delta and Beta variants but not vice versa. Nobody knows how long such immunity will last nor how effective it will be against other variants. That's the gamble most countries are taking in preference to more proactive strategies. |
