September is so much more natural a time to celebrate New Year's Day.

It's the start of a new academic year.
It's near the Autumnal Equinox.
The weather is mild the world over.
It's at the end of what amounts to a two-month "weekend" called Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Now back to work with gusto!
It's at the start of the harvest season, which marks the near-end of the growing season.
It approximates the Jewish New Year.

I'd love to lobby for September 1 (or Labor Day, for that matter, even though it is not on the first of the month) to be New Years Day.

As for things being closed on Good Friday, many financial offices such as banks and stock brokerages get the day off, and many Union entities get the day off as well. More than enough people to cause headaches to the day's economy.
