Goetz compounded his offense by shooting one of those kids a second time, after the victim's spinal cord had already been transected. Yes, the assailants admitted that they were trying to rob Goetz (on a subway car full of witnesses, at that), but again, it was that extra round Goetz put into the would-be mugger, that changed the whole case from self-defense to attempted murder.
