What is it with these people who think that their own experiences are representative of everyone else's? It's arrogant. You were able to cut back on mild luxuries in order to avoid foreclosure. Some people spend so much of their income on necessities that they have no room for savings.

You can argue that this is still their fault, that they didn't better themselves and get training for a better paying job, but even that is an example of privilege, since education/training has a cost, and not just in terms of tuition. You also did this circa 1973, when housing costs were less (adjusted for inflation), and you now have 47 years of savings under your belt. People 47 years younger than you don't.
