There is an active movement to have both the William Penn AND Christopher Columbus statues removed and placed in museums, where they can be displayed with the proper historical context.Statues are meant to glorify those they portray, giving future generations an often incomplete image of who they really were. Their stories should be told in their entirety. For example, it's fine to remember Thomas Jefferson as a Founder, author of the Declaration of Independence, and our third President, but it's also important to include the fact that he raped one of his female slaves repeatedly, and she gave birth to his child. Jefferson's family refused to recognize any of his and Sally Hemings' descendants until fairly recently. That's the kind of historical whitewash that needs to be fixed. |
