She was his slave; the gross power imbalance between then likely also created a psychological advantage for Jefferson. A slave cannot consent, and even as a free woman, Hemings might well have labored with emotional issues she was unable to overcome. This may have influenced her thinking. I wonder if a person who had a relationship with someone that had near absolute power over her, could ever differentiate between genuine affection and learned submission. Just my opinion.
