But regarding how dangerous, isn't it already an approved FDA drug?

FDA approval is not a blessing for mass consumption. There are FDA-approved drugs that are well known to cause serious and permanent side effects. For example, neuroleptics given to patients with schizophrenia will leave some of them with irreversible movement disorders like tardive dyskinesia. You don't want anyone taking such drugs who doesn't really need them.
