The 18 minute tape gap was the dealbreaker

No. It was the revelation of the automatic internal White House taping system and the 9-0 Supreme Court ruling that the special prosecutor could get hold of its tapes. One of the tapes made it clear Nixon was coordinating the efforts to obstruct the Watergate inquiry.

The 18 minute gap was in a recording manually made by Rose Mary Woods.
