As you pointed out, prior (major) political experience isn't necessarily a prerequisite for a President. Trump isn't the first chief executive to enter the White House with little or no past political history. Chester Arthur served just six months as VP before Garfield was assassinated, and before that, he was a port collector in NYC, appointed by President Grant. He essentially became President having never really experienced elective office. All his other positions were appointed.Trump, moreover, isn't the only candidate in modern times to run without a history of major office. |
