The police chief of a Pittsburgh suburb was picked up in a sting operation earlier this year, in which he solicited what he thought was a 14-year-old girl online. Public outrage against him was swift and universal; even his wife filed for divorce immediately upon his arrest. No one split hairs about what kind of -philia it was, it was clear that he was looking to have sex with a child. A judge revoked his bond when he was reported using a computer at his mother's business after being released, and now he sits in jail awaiting trial. My point is, the standards by which the Kavanaugh case is being assessed, are far different from the usual reactions to such allegations against ordinary people. |
