But there is actually a chilling effect that this has. Back in the old days (like around 2010), you would buy a DVD box set, and no matter what happened to the rights around the show or whatever controversies the stars or producers got involved in, the DVDs were yours to watch forever, at least until they decayed, like a book.Now you buy a movie or TV show from a streaming service, and when they decide to stop carrying, you lose access to it, and the only consolation they can give you is a partial refund. Even if you have it locally stored, the streaming app will usually disable the ability to play it even if it's not immediately deleted outright. |
