How does fewer murders contradict claims that crime in general is on the rise?

It strongly suggests that the latter claims are untrue. Either that or else criminals as a group are becoming more namby pamby and less likely to engage in violence. That is of course a possibility, but I'd like to see some evidence.

Can't beat the irony of the Daily News, who ON THE SAME DAY, published the news that New York City saw its fewest murders in a long time, and then on the very next page, have an article from an NYPD whistle-blower regarding top brass intentionally fudging the stats.

Yes, they're fudging the stats. They always have. That doesn't mean they're fudging the stats to an even greater extent than they used to fudge the stats.
