Oh? What then, do you think a medieval serf was? They couldn't up and move to find a better job, obtain training to get another job, or even own a home or land. They were property.

The serfs did the agricultural work, and were not allowed to profit from it. If you weren't a serf, you were born into whatever your trade was, thus containing economc mobility to within an extended family.

There's different schemes of slavery.
