Sorry, but there was no indication whatsoever that the USSR was at the point of collapse when Reagan took office in 1981. They were deep in Afghaistan and launching practice missles and were behind the crackdown in Poland in December of that year. It was when Reagan began rearming America to the teeth and giving stinger missles to the Afghan rebels that crack began to show as the rebels got stronger and stronger and then the Redswere faced with the possibility of a Star Wars Missle System. IOt wasa then that Gorbachev decided on another tack and with it the eruption in Poland in 1989 and the beginning of the end for the Soviets. Reagan was the man most responsible for that collapse.BTW, in 1981, Sen. Ted Kennedy pointedly warned Reagan that the Soviet Union was here to stay and we better be able to deal with them on a bilateral basis. Was that liberal icon full of shit as most meely mouth libs were back then? |
