Yeah thats true rival factions did catch other Africans for payment to Europeans. However, the idea of slavery with Africans and Europeans were completely different. At the time in Western Africa slavery was result of war the losers became slaves. Slavery was more akin to indentured servitude, they had more freedom to do things, many times assimilated into the tribe that enslaved them and they weren't slaves for life. This began to change when the Muslims groups from the North came through. Slavery in the America's were basically chattel slavery, much much more brutal and inhumane.
