I don't take satisfaction that this woman's whole life is destroyed.

The article seems to suggest that her motives her entire life is what I guess we could call "Identity Disphoria." She convinced herself she was a black person even as a child and then she manipulated her life and appearance to make it so.

I've known quite a few people who have labored hard to identify with some group not their own even to the point of denigrating their own group. It doesn't have to be ethnic or racial. The entire book "Great Expectations" is about the protagonist's desire to be Upper Class rather than a Laborer.

What makes Rachel uncommon is the extent of her self-deception; The elephant in the room would be explaining why her apparently sincere effort to identify as black and get institutionally involved in "black causes" is worthy of ruin but others' sincere belief that they are the wrong sex or the wrong gender is worthy of sympathy, support, medical intervention and government protection.
