One example - there were tapes of a live date with Coltrane/Dolphy recorded at Columbia U's WKCR that somehow got mistakenly erased (publicly acknowledged in a magazine article - not word of mouth or urban legend). And in rock - Pete Townsend stated in his bio, that he told one of his staff to BURN ENTIRELY well over 100 reels of tape from the Who's 1969 U.S. tours, when the band was at a significant peak - he said he felt it was too much go through to listen - he told the guy, burn it in the back garden, all of it, and if any of it ever got out on bootleg the guy's would be in big trouble..... well, to this day Townsends regrets that he ordered this done, citing it as one of the worst decisions he ever could have made..... ***and to keep it on transit - I and probably others on subchat, have heard directly from an individual formerly with a major NY transit agency, that they saw one of a kind primary source documents from NY subway history being thrown into dumpsters at a certain main location - and being done with such volume that they couldn't stop or override it; and they weren't notified of it in the first place - docs. that would have made impressive, second-to-none exhibits at a rapid transit museum.... |
