One of my ex-girlfriend's father was a 37-year vet motorman who started, and spent his whole career in the BMT Southern Division (He was Jewish who grew up in the projects) When he started as a conductor in 1966, he said that the BMT Southern Division was all Italian Cuzins, the IRT was old-school NY Irish, and the IND was Black and mixed... He said the old-timers resented the City taking the whole system over..I'm fair-looking (Blond and blue)so I used to get "Go back to Bay Ridge you Irish faggot!" and all that good stuff!! The only time I "had a pass" was when I was with my Italian friends who lived there. Then I was tolerated.. |
