Outmarriage in the U.S. is something like 50%+ and many consider that ominous for the survival of Judaism, given the already low number of Jews in the world.

Because the children of the mixed couple are unlikely to be raised as Jews. I doubt this would have been different in less enlightened times as it's easier to be a member of the majority.
