Attempting to stabilize a nation so as to not allow it to revert back to the chaotic mess it had been in 2001, providing opportunity for Alqueada to get established well enough to support another 9/11.

I agree that we should have been gone years ago.

That should have been finished by 2005, had bush not taken away resources for his stupid pointless instability creating Iraq invasion. Had we gotten Afghanistan stable and OUT by then we would have saved lives. Of course that would have meant actually holding Tora Bora for that time, instead of permitting Alqueda to leave. All that did is cause them to become disparate, waiting to reconstitute somewhere else. People in that part of the world don't mind waiting a long long time. They're used to it. And they don't forget.
