I lived in Sunnyside as young child. On Greenpoint Avenue there was the B24/27 which went from Greenpoint Brooklyn though Sunnyside/Woodside then heading south and ending up on Broadway in Williamsburg. My mother claimed that it was a combination of two routes. Prior to the merger the meeting or half-way point was Greenpoint Avenue and 47th Street.

That was the B24/29. I would have gotten into that but I wanted to type the list quickly. IINM the B24 was the one to Greenpoint and the B29 was the one to Williamsburg before combination. Sometime in the 1970s it was renamed the B24. Also the B30 was called the B24/29 Shuttle.

I forgot to mention that there was also a B84: It was the portion of the B6 east of Rockaway Parkway to Ashford/Cozine (it did not run up Ashford to New Lots). It was eliminated in or around 1972 when the B6 was extended to replace it.

Originally, after combination, it was the 24/27. Later the 29 was included, but it was too cumbersome to call it 24/27/29, so "27" was omitted and it became the 24/29.

Pretty good, but there are a few errors and omissions.

B66 was the Court Street route that was eliminated when Court and Smith were converted to one way. Believe it was a trolley not a bus.

There were two B77s. One was the B77 and the other was the B77 S which operated from the Smith 9th Station to the foot of the Columbia Street pier.

B80 was the World's Fair route from te Junction and the B81 began at Utica Avenueand Eastern Parkway. Both charged a quarter, ten cents more than the regular fare.

I think 73 was used for the Sea Gate Shuttle before they started calling it the B36 shuttle. Around 1980, there also was the B74 Shoppers Special which want as far as Corbin Place when there was little shopping opportunity in Coney Island.

The B72 was the Junction Blvd route.

B85 was the Army Base shuttle in operation for a short time not too long after the B84 started.

B43 was the Holy Cross Shuttle which was a trolley.

B32 was the "Marine Park" bus route that operated from Avenue U to te end of Barren Island where the Marine Parkway Bridge now begins. There were some houses there before Floyd Benett Field was built. It was originally called the B2, but was renumbered B32 when the current B2 began operation in June 1936. When the bridge was completed, it was extended to Rockaway Park at the southern end and to the Juction at the northern end, switched operators to Green Lines and was renumbered the Q35.

Many route numbers have been used more than once. The current B43 was originally the B47 before it was combined with the B62 Graham Avenue Route and the Flushiing Avenue portion was discontinued.

The original B15 operated over the Manhattan Bridge.

Bus routes numbered 1 through 21 were originally operated as bus routes and were not converted from trolley operation but they are not the same routes as they are today. The 31 was originally the 3A before being renumbered. The first bus routes were the A, B and C routes which became the 1A, 1B and 1C. I always forget which was which, but they operated from Ocean Parkway to Oxford Street via Brighton Beach Ave, from Ocean Parkway to Brigham Street via Avenue Z Sheepshead Bay Road and Emmons Ave and from Ocean Parkway and Avenue Z to Oxford Street via Avenue Z (return on Y), Sheepshead Bay Road, Emmons, West End and Oriental. The last one became the B1 and was later rerouted to Avenue X and 86 Street to 25 Avenue. It remained that way until 1978.

The other two pieces were combined along Ocean Parkway and became the second B21 around 1946.

The current B6 and B8 underwent numerous changes between the 1930s and 1950s. I believe the information is on Wickipedia. They were combinations of other bus routes, the original B10 and original B21. I believe the original B6 used Avenue M not Avenue J as far as E 16 St. From 60 Street until Utica it was the 21. (Later extended to Ralph, then Rockaway Parkway as the 6.).

The 8 was a combination of the 8 and 10, the 8 being the 18th Avenue portion to I think Nostrand and the 10 from the Brighton Station to Kings Highway, later extended to E 83 Street (really Remsen) as the 8.

The 9 was extended from E 16 St to Flatbush and then to Riis Park on summer weekends for a few years in the late 70s, then cutback to Kings Plaza.

The 11 went to McDonald Avenue, was cutback to 18th Avenue and extended to Rockaway Parkway in 1978, and cutback a few years later to Flatbush. The extra free transfer on the B11 is still in effect.

B5: Western portion of today's B82.
B10: Renumbered to B15 when extended to JFK Airport in 1993.
B18: Consolidated with B13 in 1990s, route east of Ridgewood to Cypress Hills eliminated. Most of the rest of the former B18 route was eliminated in the 2010 cuts, except for a short portion to Wyckoff Heights Hospital.
B19: Adelphi Street route, gone by the 1980s or early 1990s.
B21: Eliminated in the southern Brooklyn restructuring in 1978...split between B1, B4, and B36.
B22: Renumbered to Q24 in 1988.
B23: Eliminated in 2010.
B27(X): Now X27
B28(X): Now X28
B29: Northern portion part of today's B24, remainder renumbered to former B30
B30: The former B29 that didn't become part of the B24. Eliminated in 1995. Like the B24, except via Greenpoint and Review Avenues. Did not run on Sundays, and sporadic off-peak service.
B33: Lefferts Gardens to Red Hook via Prospect and Hamilton Avenue. Hung on until 1993, but it really was doomed after the Dodgers left.
B34: Eliminated in the southern Brooklyn restructuring in 1978...initially part of the B1, now part of the B1 and B64.
B40: Folded into B47 in 2007. Portion east of Ralph Avenue discontinued.
B50: Eastern portion of today's B82.
B53: Renumbered to Q54 in 1988
B55, B56, B58, B59: Redesignated as Q routes.
B66: Merged into B75, now part of B57.
B71: Union Street, discontinued 1995. Originally terminated in Carroll Gardens, extended to Columbia Street after the B65 was rerouted to downtown Brooklyn.
B73, B76: Never used
B75: Split into B57 and B61.
B77: Central portion of today's B61.

The original B84 was the eastern part of today's B6, the B86, proposed in 1978, was implemented in 2010 as today's B1, and the B88 was one of the Culture Bus Loops.

The Culture Loop 1 was totally in Manattan. Brooklyn politicians wanted a piece of the action and complained Brooklyn was left out, so II connected midtown and Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. If I remember correctly, there was a free transfer between I and II.

Forgot to mention, I believe the first B82 was the Bergen Beach shuttle which was later attached to the B3 to Avenue X and was discontinued in 2010.

Also, after Kings Plaza was completed in 1971, an unnumbered shuttle was operated from Avenue N to Avenue U along Utica Avenue for 3 years before being incorporated into the B46.

There was also the B3K which was a temporary route during the recent Brighton line reconstruction. Now they even number temporary routes probably for computer purposes.

I also omitted much info. I tried to concentrate on stuff that related to route numbering since that was the original question.

Most of all I wanted to makes the point that numbers have been reused more than once, just like the bus and subway fleet. I wasn't sure if the original poster knew that.

There still are some numbers that I am not sure of.

Also, while the trolleys didn't show any route numbers until the PCC cars, guide books did have numbers for them which duplicated bus numbers starting from one. Later they were renumbered to follow after where te bus numbers wore off. That's why the B22 (Q24) was the lowest numbered bus number that was previously a trolley.

For example the Church Avenue trolley was previously routes 8 and 13. One started at First Ave and the other at Cortelyou and McDonald, it was later cutback to Church and both were called the B35.

Also forgot to mention the B50 was the McDonald Avenue trolley.

Stiil wonder about numbers 28 (local not express), 76, and 79. There also must have been a previous 51. The Smith-Coney Island trolley also must have had a number but I don't know what it was. Maybe they reused 66 for that or it could have been 76. That would have made sense.

I'll say. We've lost some of our old hands (BMTLines, anyone?). Even I don't post as much anymore.

They all remember Terp as a nice guy, who apparently went off of the deep end.

That's a very apt description. He was amazingly nice about 7-8 years ago, but apparently something happened around 2010-ish and he just snapped. Maybe he got fired? Divorced? Some calamity happened to him. He threw a few fits about getting fired from Stantec, but it's just as likely he got fired because he went off the deep end than that being the trigger.

There was also The Bronx Culture Loop III, BX 56 IIRC.

The Bx-56 Culture Bus III began on 9/28/74. This route was discontinued on December 1, 1974 due to lack of ridership. We didn't have a lot of culture in The Bronx in those days and if you planned to travel through the South Bronx you needed a flack jacket and an M-16 (the rifle, not the bus route).

The rifle should be renamed M-34A SBS for consistency's sake.

Don't forget the express ones.

The BM10, 11, 12, and 15 ran from Southeast Brooklyn.

I wonder if a BM13 and a BM14 existed.

How did the B80 and B81 operate to and from the World's Fair? One had to be from Broadway Junction. I know when I was very young and lived in East New York I remember taking a bus from the Broadway Junction area to the Worlds Fair with my parents.

That's incorrect. I have made very useful contributions to many threads. LOL!

You are delusional. Since you left Stantec, I guess you lost health coverage and can't get mental treatment.

Yes, you're an idiot because you mindlessly repeat others' messages without considering the validity of said messages.

LOL, I don't need to show any proff! I'm not the one who made the claim that BMTLines doesn't post here anymore! YOU repeated that claim. The burden of proff is on you! LOL! You crack me up, you big fool!

I was looking for proof that BMT Lines is still here. But in your rush of hate, you wrote something else. Fired from the mailroom? Now I pity you even more that you couldn't hold a job as a mail clerk.

you wrote something else.

Oh, and BTW, you idiot, that was a DIFFERENT post where you were looking for proff of that. In the post you just responded to, I was asking YOU for proff of this statement that you made: "You're the ONLY one who thinks you have made useful contributions."

With every message you write, you reaffirm to every member on this list that you have no value. You think you're outsmarting me, but instead you're outsmarting yourself by showing everybody that you're just a mean, vile person.

It's impossible to have an intelligent conversation with you because you have NO INTELLIGENCE.

There is just no depth to the amount of pity I have for you. Since you crave attention, I'll give you all the pity you want.
