New NABI's for Vegas |
|
Posted by CAT218 on Wed Feb 6 21:44:41 2008 Two of our new hybrid NABI low floors arrived today, #'s 954 and 955. I've only seen a couple of pics that a coworker took, but the front is completely different than any other NABI I've seen. The headlights are stacked vertically rather than horizontally and the rest of the front is curved slightly, similar to the New Flyer LFR's. I've never posted photos on here, so I may just send them to a buddy of mine on here and have him do that. I don't have any engine specs or anything like that, but it looks pretty nice. From what I've heard this is the first of this kind that NABI has produced, including frameless windows.Once my coworker has emailed them to me I can fiddle around with them and at least email them to WayneJay or Rideonrulez and see if they can post them on here for me. They still have the white protective cover so it may be difficult to get the full effect but you can definitely tell it's different than the regular 40LFW's. I'll try to go over to the Simmons yard on Friday to see if I can get some other pics as well. |

I guess the last of the "Big Four" transit bus manufacturers has redesigned their "box bus". I was expecting this from NABI sooner or later.By any chance, does it look like the NABI 60-LFW (note I am talking about the loner order for Chicago, not the 60-BRT). |

A little bit and that's what I thought it was going to look like. But the top of the bus is curved in such a way that it's recessed a bit from the headsign. It's hard to put it into words as it lost it's boxy front. |

I enlarged the photo and it appears that the small piece of paper in the left half of the front windshield (by the doors) is an Arizona temporary license. As I recall all CAT buses have Nevada license plates, so unless the buses were sitting in Arizona for some reason I don't see why they would need a temporary Arizona license plate, as NABI is located in Alabama and buses would probably drive through Arizona to get to Vegas.Hopefully they will stop over in Phoenix to refuel and will provide a contrast between Valley Metro's boxy 40-LFWs, which were some of the first built (they were the launch customer in 1998 and have the first ever 40-LFW built, the first 35-LFW built and the first 45C-LFW built). |

I am curious if this bus could be the type of bus that replaces the 1998 Valley Metro 40-LFWs (albeit LNG fueled). NABI could've done a demonstration for an Arizona transit agency (such as Sun Tran, Tempe, the RPTA, or Phoenix). The 180 1998 NABI 40-LFWs (and 15 1998 NABI 35-LFWs) will hit the magic age of 12 in 2010. While I believe that most of them may stick around until they are 15 or so, there is a chance that they will be gradually replaced beginning in 2010. |

I like the way it looks (although it definately bears resemblance to the Orion VII NG as well as New Flyer X40LFR series of buses). I prefer more traditional styling so I prefer the New Flyer X40LFR styling over this, but I would definitely prefer this over the Orion VII NG or the Gillig BRT styling (my least favorite). |

Given that the oldest RTS buses stuck around until the age of 19, and the NABIs just got a rehab, I think that they are going to stick around for 20 years. Remember that the D40LFs never were rehabbed. |

I would have thought that too had I not read:![]() It shows 46 buses budgeted for replacement in FY08-09, FY09-10, FY10-11, FY11-12, FY12-13, and then 54 buses budgeted for replacement in FY13-14. Phoenix has 287 NABI 40-LFW buses (156 1998, 35 1999, and 96 2002 models. Those numbers (added up) equal 284. What it means to me is a gradual replacement of the NABIs will begin possibly this year with them being phased out 46 a year until an accelerated phase out of 54 between July 2013 and July 2014. What's interesting is it shows Phoenix purchasing 10 expansion 60' buses (Phoenix purchased 30 2007 D60LFs as well as Phoenix Purchasing 130 replacement 40' buses prior to the dates I have listed above (as far as I know there have been 96 2007 D40LFs and 20 2008 L40LFRs purchased. |

It probably looks better without the temporary wrapping on the front end, though.Although I wish they did something better with the side windows... the "step-up" in the rear doesn't look too good. Perhaps they could have painted the area underneath the high-floor window section black to look a bit more continuous. |

I just wish they still had that slanted side window like the regular 40LFWs.Now the sides strongly remind me of New Flyers. I don't have the impression that they feel cheap so much as they just kinda rattle a bit. That photo of 756 is a classic since the 403 is no longer in operation. That seems to be the case with Valley Metro's NABI buses (which are quite similar to CAT's ones in terms of specifications, with the A/C on the roof and similar seats/flooring). I was riding on one last night and the main reason why they rattle is because of the small screwed-in covers that are on the ad racks. The screws become loose and the small covers rattle nonstop. New Flyer buses do not have this, which is why they don't rattle as much. I hope they changed this on the new NABI buses because it is extremely loud.By the way, are CAT's 1999 NABIs LNG-powered, do they have two A/C units, or is there nothing in the back where the A/C normally is? I ask because in the case of Valley Metro, the A/C is on the roof and where the A/C normally is (there are vents there although no unit) there is a large steel LNG tank. |

Apparently, according to the thread about Broward County NABI buses, it sounds like they got the same type of bus as well, with delivery at the same time (40-foot, "aerodynamic front" and seamless windows). So that makes 2 TAs in 2 days to take delivery of these new buses.
