Yeah after seeing nothing but CNG's on that line, Hybrids and RTS's will be quite a site on the B61.
Nice pics. [I just wished FLA gave Grand Av the ex-NYCT RTS it got back recently for the B47]

Thanks.

I'm extremely glad that the Orion VII CNGs are finally off the B61. But that means no more C40LFs either, which isn't so good. At least hybrids and RTSs aren't so bad -- it'll help me remember when the B61 was all RTSs before the CNGs came to Gleason.

It funny that all of this seems odd with the B61, but in fact the B61 is has sort of gone back to normal. Years (early 1980s) ago the B61 was a Crosstown route (which is not too far from Grand Ave). When Crosstown closed the B61 went to Gleason (then 5th Ave).

Not only that, but did you know that some of the 8500s have returned to the B61? The only difference is that they are now being operated out of GA instead of at JG.
Here's a fact: I rode 8540 on the B61 back in 1995 from Downtown Brooklyn-QBP.

Well not 8540, but I saw 8541 on the B3 yesterday. At first I thought it was 9541 [which I see the most of the 95xx RTS, but upon closer view it was 8541]. First 85xx bus I've seen in a while. 8507 I saw last month in Fla depot.

I hate the new B43 and B61 (along with the rest of Grand Avenue, especially the logo), now they're just ordinary routes that use Hyshits and RTS buses, and most importantly, out of all of the damn moves I saw today, not one diesel O5 showed up!

Yesterday, I did take a Hyshit on the B61 (6606) and I waited 40 minutes as the 6:15PM from Queens Plaza did not show up. I also noticed that the driver of the 6:35PM started talking to some of the passengers during her short break in between runs saying that Grand Avenue got the route (as if they cared... smh), and how she doesn't really know the routing of it that well while she could have simply just looked at the map behind her during her break and jotted down some notes instead of stopping 3 times during the trip to ask the passengers the routing or getting up to look at the map. We also wasted 3 minutes trying to make that right turn onto Freeman Street from the extremely wide McGuinness Boulevard.

I noticed over the weekend a lot of buses running along the route Not In Service, to get familar with it.

On Saturday, when I got on the B43, it was a hybrid. The B/O looked pretty pissed. I swear, we both had the same look on our faces. I said to him; "I just don't know what to say.". He responds; "Me either.".

What time did you take these photos? Just so happens I got 9481 on the LIC-bound 61 on Jay between Fulton & Willougby around 2:00.

The driver was no doubt new to the route. Instead of making the prescribed left off Classon onto Kent, he took an around-the-block detour via Rutledge, Whythe and Heyward before going normal. This was accompanied by the expected gutteral squeals and cries of "WTF?!"

Makes you wonder: when a driver is new to a route, is he given a route map or a piece of paper listing the moves as with subway shuttles? The Brooklyn Bus Map doesn't make it clear that LIC-bound B61s are supposed to use Keap when switching from Kent to Whythe- even the Williamsburg close-up.

Later that afternoon I rode the Q54 from Union Turnpike to Queens Boulevard. During the ride and somewhat long wait beforehand, I saw 9100s, 9500s and Hybrids- no 8800s.

It shouldn't be that hard as the B61 turn guides are listed on gleasondepot.net. I don't understand how a driver can drive a route without knowing the route itself since that information is at the tip of their fingers.

IIRC the Hyshits and some RTS' came from Fresh Pond, with even more RTS' coming from Flatbush. What I wish would happen is some Orion V diesel action in Brooklyn (sorry to all of those sick of seeing this same rant, they're just my favorite buses).

The routes I've seen Grand Avenue operating are the B43, B48, B57, B61 (although they do a horrible job operating the now seemingly unreliable B61 due to them not doing the obvious and jotting down routing information). Other routes I recall they're operating are the B15, B24, B39, B47, B51 (still belongs at Jackie Gleason), B60, and Q59.

I honestly do not know why they took the B61 unless peak direction in the AM is south and in the PM it's north. Jackie Gleason is closer to the B61's Red Hook terminal by almost a mile (when compared to the distance between Grand Avenue and Queens Plaza) and is a faster deadhead being 10 minutes as opposed to 14 minutes between Grand Avenue and Queens Plaza. Same goes for the B43.

I really don't think NYCT would think very highly of an operator taking a bus out of the depot for a little spin just to get used to a new route. Let him drive his own car and pay for his own gas! No doubt the buses you saw running on the route were transfer moves.

Shame on her for asking the passengers the route. Extremely unprofessional. If she didn't know it, it was her responsibility before pull out to copy it down. If the route guides were not available in the new depot, then it was the operators responsibility to do whatever he/she had to do to get it beforeheand, even if a trip to Gleason depot was necessary before the change, even if the driver was not then stationed there. Subway t/o's, if they don't know their line-ups on an unfamilar route are supposed to get guides too. gleasondepot.net? Nice, I will check this out, didn't know it existed, but having internet is not a prequisite to be a NYCT bus operator.

Not the first time this has happened. I recall riding Command Bus on a Saturday with a rookie driver who asked me to assist him with the stops [I was the first passenger to board]in exchange for a free ride.

I had to direct a Greyhound driver all the way from Wilmington, DE to Port Authority (with the stop in Newark) almost 3 years ago. He was from Texas and came over to help with a shortage or something, but knew nothing about the route, and only had a crudely written set of directions. At first, he started following a sign to "Newark", but this was the one in Delaware-- heading back to where the bus had come from (the other direction, towards Washington!)

I myself got mixed up on Raymond Blvd where there was a fork, and no sign, and we ended up on the bridge to Harrison. People who lived around there were able to get us back into Newark station.

I think you meant the B18 being replaced with the B13. I wonder why the B13 didnt go to Grand Ave?

I guess you got your RDO on Sunday...;)

B13 goes right in front of FP. I see BO's usually switch at FP Road and 67 AV. Makes no sense to be at Grand Av.
