You know, i don't know why so many people are picking on this new bus. Let's analyze this for a minute:

1-NOVABUS is not comning back to nYC. Nope. Never.
2-Orion at the moment is to be the dominant bus for MTA.
3-The Hybrid is a TEST. It's not what the city would get but we MIGHT get something close to it-at least be 40 ft.

There really isn't many bus manufacturers left to distribute to NYC or in general. the Flyer is the biggest but with all the issues surrounding the bus, it is amazing that the city got what they did.
I particulaly love the Gilligs and the Flexible Metros. But the city isn't buying the Gilligs and the Flexibles aren't made anymore. Accept what we have because it's basically what's there.

This bus doesn't represent what the MTA wants!!!!!! This is a one-size fits all demo being paraded around the country by Wachovia. I'm sure NYCT did NOT request this. They accepted it for testing just to see how the hybrid system works. They are not seriously considering the bus containing the hybrid system. This is purely an evaluation of the technology, not the bus containing it!

I know where it came from. Obviously I meant that it is consistent with European design. I doubt New Zealand has its own design language for buses. As such, their designers are likely heavily influenced by what is being designed in Europe and Asia.

I like European design, such as Van-Hool. That looks like a bus, not an RV. There are European models that look like buses, and have bus capacity.

Besides why would they test this hideous smaller contraption of a bus, with passenger loads, but never put that Van-Hool artic model out for the public to ride, and see how the public felt about that. They just kept that artic in Zerega facility, before sending it back to AC Transit. Van-Hool wanted the MTA to test that bus. MTA = ass backwards at times.

I understand why so many people are throwing a hissy fit. It's human nature to do so, when change comes along.

Never did test on that one either, with real passengers on board (aka revenue service testing). They do make them as hybrids. They could of got input on how the riding public felt about that. That one I am fond of the design too. It did have the upright engine, like most buses do, unlike the Hool. I can understand why they might of not decided to get the Hool. It would cost alot to train the amount of mechanics we have at the TA, to work on that kind of engine. Plus we really don't have the space in the depots to make room for engines that have to be accessed from the side. It's tight already. But the nova LFS artic, has a common type of bus engine, it comes as a hybrid, and it should of been thoroughly tested. More routes need artics, as they are showing at Baisley Park. Instead of wasting time testing this thing, they should be focused on testing artics. We have a supplier of 40ft hybrid buses, and it does keep upstate with jobs. Time to test what really needs to be tested.

There are European models that look like buses

I agree. There are some buses that differ over there. But from what I saw in London, Israel, and in the photos posted here from China, buses with designs similar to this one are all over the place.

and have bus capacity

NYCT is not evaluating the capacity of the bus. They would not buy 35 footers. They are likely just evaluating the hybrid system.

Besides why would they test this hideous smaller contraption of a bus, with passenger loads, but never put that Van-Hool artic model out for the public to ride

Because it seems Wachovia and/or the manufacturer are footing some part of the bill. Maybe all of it. And NYCT might want to see how the hybrid system works. But I highly highly highly doubt they are at all considering purchasing this exact bus model with that length and that width.

I understand why so many people are throwing a hissy fit. It's human nature to do so, when change comes along.

But this isn't change. They won't buy this model bus. And I highly doubt they'd buy any bus that looks like that. The most likely scenario is that they'd use this buses hybrid system, or one like it, in a bus with a more traditional body.

I don't think they are wasting much time with this thing. They were probably offered it by Wachovia, with Wachovia paying some portion of the costs for the test runs. It may just be a win/win for NYCT.

If they got a free fleet for testing (10 buses) it would be a win-win. Right now it is a waste of time. We have upstate residents to keep with jobs, in the future. Orion VII NG anyone? The 400-600series rust buckets, time should be nearing also. They will need replacement, soon. I hope very soon. RTS 8109 didn't rattle as much as, these 400-600series. IAWTP. I think a lot of people on this thread are hatin' on the bus's design because it's different. What if it were flipped around? What if instead of RTSs and Orions, every bus in this general area looked like the DesignLine MK-1, and a boxy Gillig or Orion 5 showed up for testing? Frankly, I like the different look. Now, if they could just send up some New Flyer DE40's or Optima Opuses, that'd be cool.

Yeah well since then we've seen photos of it on the M42.

And the original article only said it would be on 42 St this week. It didn't clearly say that it had started running. You know how the media often gets things wrong.

I agree with you on the front. I like that the side has one continuous window (with the two emergency exit panels). I'd also like to see the rear. I'll probably go into Manhattan to take a look at this thing myself. I also noticed that the bus is numbered 9900, which is a number that was skipped when renumbering the Queens Surface Orion 5's when they were taken over by MTA Bus (QSC 468 is now MTAB 9899, QSC 469 is now MTAB 9901). Obviously, this particular demo bus was probably not the intent of skipping the number, it is interesting that a demo bus has acquired it.

The Optima Opus...it maybe could work here.
I'd like to see a 40' version attempted, however.

If you want a low floor 40 footer, NABI will sell you a 40LFW, however, not an Opus (Optima Bus, NABI, Blue-Bird, and now Chrysler (although the bus division is expected to be severed) are all under one umbrella).

Car, van, SUV, school bus, commercial bus, or motorcoach, NABI or a sister company will sell it to you.

BTW, that would be the bus division of DaimlerChrysler (as it is called now) that would be severed from Chrysler.

I'll be in the city tomorrow and/or Tuesday. I'll see what I can do.
