Hello, this is my first post here. I justed wanted to give my two cents about the new bus. I don't know if you guys know, but the turbine in the bus is really pretty cool. They're made out in CA by a company called Capstone, the use no oil. They use air bearings, which cuts down on the turbines down time, they have very good MTBF. As far Designline goes, they are building a plant in NC that should be ready trhis spring. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Oh one more thing, the turbine is very very quiet.

Well, the Optima Opus shells are licensed to WrightBus in UK. They have a 40 foot with three different type of chassis.
Wright Eclipse (Volvo B7/B7A)

Wright Solar (Scania L94UB)

Wright Meridian (MAN A22)

They can also do something to play around. The trident that run in HK are used to be with single pane windshield. But one of the operater think it will be better if they use two, so they change the future order inti 2 pane windshield.

I think it's running only on 42nd Street. I caught it today around 11:45 heading toward the Javits Center.

Only one driver is on it each day, so it went out of service for about an hour around noon, for a meal break. I think they trained 5 drivers to operate the bus.

I liked the bus, especially the one big wiper arm for the front windshield. Also, the people aboard were easy going.

The LFS only comes with single pane windshields..
But MAYBE they COULD get it anyway they want...

Perhaps they want this bus for its BRT routes...?

Or they don't want to deal with NOVA at all?

LOL! Nice subject! What time did you take this picture? I was out there today from 1130am until about 315pm. Pictures will be posted fairly soon.
All and all, it did have a nice ride to it. Better than any of the Orion VIIs, that's for sure. However, 35 feet will not cut it for NYC.
Many people that boarded were comparing 9900 to an airport shuttle bus.

I gather this was after those people had experienced the bus. It seems that some mebers on this board were and still are very quick to judge the Designline bus despite not riding it, hearing that this bus did well elsewhere, and the fact the MTA is apparently just testing the propulsion system.

MTA may test 30 DesignLine 40' Hybrid Buses

MTA may test new hybrid electric buses

By Marlene Naanes
July 17, 2008

Library-quiet electric hybrid buses could be put to the test on city streets this fall.

Thirty futuristic-looking 40-foot buses will roll out on local routes in Manhattan beginning this September if the MTA board approves a $50 million-plus contract for a two-phase pilot project next week. If all goes well, the agency would then give the green light for the second phase, which would bring another 60 electric hybrid buses to the streets.

A smaller model of the buses proved successful during a 30-day trial run last fall on Manhattan and Queens bus routes. Transit officials are optimistic the buses will stand up to bumpy city streets during the pilot.

"We wouldn't be going through this step if we didn't think it was worth it," New York City Transit spokesman Paul Fleuranges said.

The buses feature a hybrid electric turbine engine in place of a diesel engine, quieting down an operating bus to a whisper. The engines also do not require oil changes and some other maintenance, so the buses are better for the environment and cheaper to operate, transit said.

Transit already has 824 diesel hybrid buses in its fleet of 4,565 at a cost of $531,666 each. The new hybrid electric turbine engine buses cost an additional $28,136 a piece, but cuts down on maintenance costs....

One, that bus is hideous in ways that the original Ford Taurus was hideous.

Two, Was it at one time wrapped for Wachovia?

The original ford Taurus was anything but hideous. It was a design leader.

Yes, it was wrapped for Wachovia.

I didn't think it looked too bad...I would have liked to see it in a 40' configuration.

Yes, it was originally wrapped for Wachovia.

Oh, the Taurus was definately a sign of things to come, but the first-gen design wasn't the best iteration of it.

Yes, but of a different design, not the one that was here in New York.

So you're saying it wasn't hideous, just a bit unrefined?
