It looks to me that the 'frameless' types in the pictures are of the bonded design, whereas the more normal type are held in by the rubber around the window. The difference when a window is broken is that a conventional framed-type pane can be replaced quickly - prise the rubber strips out, clean the remains of the window away and then fit a new pane of glass and refit the rubber.With the 'frameless' (i.e. bonded) glazing however, replacing a window equates to a couple of days out of service. This is because the glass is held in place by a bonding-type substance which needs to be mixed up, and then takes a day or two to cure properly. Until it's cured and the window is properly held in place, the bus must sit in the yard. This is the only reason I can think of - fitting conventional 'framed' windows equates to much less down time when a pane gets broken. |

Every bus since the 1982 RTSs at the MTA (save the MCI cruisers---no windows) has been spec'd with two sliding windows on each side. (Some buses wound up with different specifications, however, over time, such as RTS 3303 with all windows except one opening, and 4497 (when it got sent to Ulmer Park after being out of service for many years at Walnut), ended up with 100% SEALED windows.The specs for local buses have not changed much since 1983---always rear A/C, hooligan lights on each side of the sign, and two sliding windows on each side, to name a few. |

Every bus purchased by NYCT since the 1981 RTS has been fully climate controlled.Yet the sliding windows came back in the 1982 RTS, and most 1981's were subsequently retrofitted with sliding windows. Guess what: climate control systems break on occasion. |
