Tuscarora Almanac for September 24

Tuscarora Almanac for September 24

1948 – from The Book of First and Last Runs

New York City takes over operation of the six bus routes of the Comprehensive Omnibus Corporation and the East Side Omnibus Corporation.

Comprehensive had three routes; M-1 Madison-Chambers Streets Crosstown (today’s M-22), M-3 49-50 Streets Crosstown (today’s M-50 also M-27 at one time), and M-7 65th Street Crosstown (today’s M-66).

East Side Omnibus also had three routes; M-11 York Avenue (today’s M-31), M-13 First Avenue and M-15 Second Avenue. First and Second Avenues were made one way only on June 3, 1951 and the M-13 was discontinued at this time. The M-15 designation was now used for both routes.

The M-31 today actually operates on York Avenue and then goes almost all the way across 57th Street to 11th Avenue and 54th Street as I remember. It used to until the mid-'90s go to Lexington Avenue and 59th Street where it terminated going to Lexington across 61st and from there across 57th.

That and the M-15 were my primary bus routes growing up.

When the (originally) M-11 was started up in 1933, its southern terminus was 57th Street and 2nd Avenue. It was called "York Avenue-57th Street" to distinguish from another East Side Omnibus route, M-12 - York Avenue-86th Street, which route would later be incorporated into New York City Omnibus' Route 18 (now M86+SBS). It is thus ironic that today M31 truly IS a York Avenue-57th Street route, going, as you said, all the way across 57th up to 11th Avenue and 54th. (And even more ironic that, on 10th and 55th, there are technically two M-11's - the one that is today M31, and the 9th-Amsterdam route - that stop there.)

When was the southern terminus moved to 59th and Lex?

The interesting part is that Manhattan had 3 M7’s operating between 1972 and 1974.

Before 1972 two of the three M7's were not M's, but just plain 7. Only the TA-run routes had an M in front of them. Similarly for 1, 3, 11 and 15.

I included Avenue B and East Broadway’s M7 which was an express bus along with M7A

The M-31 went to 59th and Lex from the mid-1970's until it started going its current route circa 1994 or so.
